by Ars Musica Chorale
on March 28

Ars Musica Chorale will present two beautiful and beloved choral works on Sunday, March 28: Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, and Spirituals from Michael Tippett’s oratorio, “A Child of Our Time.” Music Director Robert Long will conduct both works at the chorus’s principal venue, West Side Presbyterian Church, 6 South Monroe St., Ridgewood, at 3 p.m.

Ars Musica’s Board of Directors chose Doctors Without Borders to receive the funds. At the concert, a box for donations will be set up at the door, and Ars Musica will contribute its proceeds beyond expenses to that collection.

Rossini is best known for his delightful opera “The Barber of Seville.” The Mass, despite its name, is sometimes playful, seldom solemn, and not particularly brief. It was composed to be performed by a small choir in a private chapel—thus the “petite”-- and called “solemn” because it set a complete mass text. Rossini composed it in 1863, five years before his death at age 76, calling it the “last mortal sin of my old age.”

Tippett’s “A Child of our Time” was completed shortly after World War II. Although British, Tippett turned to American spirituals to illustrate his theme of the oppression of the individual by a tyrannical state.

Now in its fifth decade, Ars Musica Chorale is a premier Northern New Jersey group that has performed throughout the New York metropolitan region and in Europe. Under Mr. Long’s stewardship the membership has expanded to close to 60 singers. The professional soloists for Rossini’s Mass are Sandra Barr (soprano), Jan Wilson (mezzo-soprano), Frederick Voegele (tenor), and Joseph McKee (bass). Solos in the Tippett will be sung by area residents and chorus members Marjorie Vandervoort, Laura Van Orden, Edward Hedlund, and Bill Bott. Cynthia Powell, on the organ, and Linda Glasgal, pianist, will be the accompanists.

Funding for this program has been made possible in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts through Grant funds administered by the Bergen County Department of Parks, Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs.

Tickets for the 3 p.m. concert are available at www.arsmusica.org and at the door. Tickets are $20; children under 12 admitted free. Paid tickets from the March 13 concert will be honored. For more information, call 973 628-8793 or e-mail arsmusica@hotmail.com.
